The function of the hair cells

The organ of Corti includes the inner and outer hair cells with each their function. The combined function of the two types of hair cells is essential to the function of hearing.

The inner hair cells

The inner hair cells convert the physical energy in the fluid of the inner ear into electrical energy, which is delivered to the brain via Cranial Nerve VIII (the auditory nerve).

The outer hair cells

The function of the outer hair cells is somewhat similar to the servo mechanism in a car. The weak vibrations produced by a soft sound are increased mechanically so as to stimulate the inner hair cells.
