Hearing aid fitting

A hearing aid must be fit individually according to the user’s needs and hearing loss configuration.
The hearing aid must be fit to suit the individual hearing loss.

The fitting is a process in which the person with hearing loss and the hearing healthcare professional together determine which hearing aid settings provide the best possible sound quality.

Fitting methods

There are a number of special methods for fitting hearing aids so that they match the individual hearing loss.

Sensogram

Some hearing aids may be fit using in-situ audiometry, also called a Sensogram. Here, the setting of the hearing aid amplification is calculated on the basis of hearing threshold measurements with the hearing aid/earmould placed in the user’s ear.

General fitting rule

Other hearing aids may be fit using a general fitting rule which is based on threshold measurements that calculate the hearing aid amplification.

Regardless of the hearing aid fitting method used, it should be noted that it may be necessary to consult with the hearing healthcare professional several times to complete the fitting.

Advice and instruction

After the fitting, the hearing healthcare professional will explain how to use the hearing aid – for example how to put it on and take it off, how to change the battery, how to care for it and how to adjust the volume, if the hearing aid is equipped with a manual volume control.
