Morten Olsen heads the run for hearing awareness | Morten Olsen – coach of the Danish national football team - will be heading the Widex Marathon Team to help raise awareness of hearing-related issues. He has been living with impaired hearing for many years and actively supports the international team, which has been formed to highlight the fact that today’s advanced hearing solutions give people the freedom to lead a full and active life.
The team’s 37 runners from 16 countries will be participating in the 2005 Berlin Marathon.
- Many prejudices exist about hearing loss. Although my hearing gradually got worse, I did nothing about it. I was often uncertain whether I had caught everything, but still I postponed the decision to get hearing aids far too long. It was a huge relief to me and those around me when I was again able to take an active part in everyday life, says Morten Olsen.
He has been living with impaired hearing due to a hereditary disorder for many years, and it has significantly affected his quality of life both in his professional career as a football coach and in his private life. When he finally acquired hearing aids, his quality of life improved instantly.
- I spent far too much energy trying to hear what I needed to hear. Especially on the field, an extra effort was required due to the wall of noise from the many spectators. You don’t realise how tired you become until you can hear properly again, says Morten Olsen.
It is Morten Olsen’s personal experiences that motivate him to head the Widex Marathon Team. The team was launched by the Danish hearing aid manufacturer Widex to inspire people with hearing loss to get the most out of life. The marathon team concept was inspired by the launch of the élan open fitting hearing solution – a solution particularly suited to active first-time hearing aid users. The theme of the élan campaign “Push the Limits” applies to obtaining one’s first hearing instrument as well as it applies to running a marathon.
For Tom Westermann, Vice-President, Widex Sales and Marketing, the marathon is partly about helping other people, and partly about putting focus on the opportunities provided by high-quality hearing instruments. Widex will provide a strong coaching team to assist the international team’s participants, some of whom have never run a marathon distance.

The marathon team will first participate in a one-week training camp on Lanzarote, where they will be given the best opportunities for planning their further training activities, assisted by, amongst others, Morten Olsen and the four coaching team members: Morten Fenger, former European triathlon champion, Anders Hummel, former instructor in the Royal Danish Navy Frogman Corps, Steen Barnung, physician, and Margit Whitta, psychologist and triathlete. | | |
