Widex rewards beach volleyball player | The American beach volleyball player Tamijo Foronda received a $5000 award from Widex during this year’s Deaflympic games in Australia.
The Deaflympic games are among the world's fastest growing sports events. More than 3,000 deaf athletes and officials from 75 nations participated in the 20th Summer Games in Melbourne, Australia, in January 2005.
Widex has been involved in the Deaflympic games since they were held in 1989 in Copenhagen, Denmark - where Widex gave out the first Fair Play Award. This year Widex handed out the $5000 Fair Play Award to the American beach volleyball player Tamijo Foronda.
“Tamijo Foronda received the award because of her good sportsmanship and fair play. She has a positive spirit and a good sense of humour”, says Widex’ Sales and Marketing Director, Tom Westermann. Tamijo Foronda was selected out of the many qualified candidates each representing their sport.
The games have been organized since 1924 by the Comité International des Sports des Sourds, CISS (The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf). The first games were held in Paris. Winter games were added in 1949. Today the Deaflympic games are sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee, IOC.
The 16th Winter Games will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States in 2007. Approximately 300 athletes from 20 nations are expected to qualify for the games.
