It is important for young childrenwith impaired hearing to have the best possible conditions for communication and language development in their everyday lives.
SCOLA gives young children with impaired hearing opportunities for hearing and understanding speech when they are in noisy environments with poor acoustics. In effect, the SCOLA system brings the child closer to the person speaking, making everyday communication easier. This can contribute significantly to the language and social development of the child.
Scientific studies suggest that young children generally have more difficulty hearing and understanding speech in background noise than older children and adults. An FM communication system such as SCOLA enables young children to hear their own and other people’s speech clearly in far more situations. This is very important for the language development of the young child.
The receiver plugs into the hearing aid and the transmitter is placed close to the sound source the child wants to hear. The transmitter could, for example:
hang around the neck of a parent |
hang around the neck of a teacher |
be placed on a table. | This means the distance from the person speaking is no longer an obstacle to hearing well. The child’s effective listening point is where the SCOLAtalk microphone is positioned.
The microphone in the transmitter employs sophisticated directional technology, so it can be set to pick up sound only from a focused direction. This allows the child to hear the person speaking clearly, while surrounding background noise is significantly reduced.
