Stories and video testimonials from people with hearing aids

Meet people who have gained back their quality of life with hearing aids - read or listen to their stories - how they experience having a hearing loss and how hearing aids have improved their every day life.

Dee (54) Lecturer

I think that I was about 35 when all things started to get very difficult; talking to people, my job… It was a big chock realising that I could not hear properly.

The worst thing is when people say something and you do not hear it and ask, ‘Pardon’. Then they repeat it in the same way and you still do not hear it, and ask if they could please say that again. If people simply say: ‘Oh, it does not matter’ it really feels terrible.

Of course it matters, because I want to hear what people are saying to me. It has been a hard process recognising and accepting my hearing loss, but the hearing aid has helped me to bridge the gap between the hearing impaired world and the hearing world.

Simon (28) Schoolteacher

I knew that I had a hearing loss, but I never really thought about what kind of difference a hearing aid could make. I guess it really boiled down to playing good oldfashioned ego, worrying about appearances.

But then I thought ‘That’s rubbish’. I think the most important impact the hearing aid has is the one on your own personality because you become more comfortable with yourself. You accept yourself for who you are – as a complete person.

Paul (33) Bus Driver & IT Student

I used to try and bluff my way out, and I really became quite good at talking my way out of a difficult situation where I had not heard everything. I spent so much energy on this, simply because I wanted to be as normal as everybody else.

Naturally, it was a grind for me to listen to lectures because I had difficulties understanding what people were saying. The hearing aids have changed my life. I am now able to enjoy my studies and make the most of my life.

Emma (12) Schoolgirl

Being hearing impaired is really like not having any ears. Imagine that there is no one talking. It is just quiet and you do not follow the conversations between your friends, so you cannot join in. My hearing aids enable me to hear what is going on around me.

It means that I can do all the things I want to do in my spare time and at school. It is great because I like being active and I participate in all sorts of exciting things. I do not really want to miss out on anything.
